Porcelain Tile Trends We Discovered in Bologna: What’s Coming to Miami in 2026

During the month of May, the Italgres team had the opportunity to travel to Bologna, Italy, one of the world’s leading hubs for the ceramic and porcelain tile industry. Located in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region, Bologna is home to some of the most important tile manufacturers and production facilities in the world, making it the birthplace of many of the trends that eventually shape residential and commercial design projects across the globe.
As we do every year, we visited numerous suppliers, showrooms, and innovation centers to gain first-hand insight into where the industry is heading. After several days exploring new collections, technologies, and finishes, we identified a number of key trends that are set to influence interior and exterior design in the years ahead.
LARGE FORMAT TILES CONTINUE TO DOMINATE
One thing became immediately clear during our visit: large format porcelain tiles continue to establish themselves as the preferred choice for both luxury residential projects and commercial spaces.
Over the past few years, the 48″ x 48″ tile has become one of the most popular formats among architects and designers. However, manufacturers are now increasingly focusing on even larger dimensions, including:
- 63″ x 63″ porcelain tile
- 63″ x 125″ slab tile
- 48″ x 110″ slab tile
The reason is simple. Larger formats create cleaner, more continuous surfaces by significantly reducing the number of visible grout lines. This results in a greater sense of openness and visual harmony, qualities that are particularly desirable in modern, open-concept spaces
Additionally, larger porcelain slabs help create seamless transitions between different areas of a home or commercial property, making spaces feel more connected and expansive. In cities like Miami, where contemporary architecture and indoor-outdoor living are highly valued, this trend continues to gain momentum year after year.
THE RISE OF BOUTIQUE TILE AND SMALL FORMATS
While oversized tiles continue to grow in popularity, we also observed an equally strong trend moving in the opposite direction: the return of small-format porcelain tiles.
Many manufacturers showcased collections inspired by the concept of boutique tile, offering an impressive variety of sizes, colors, textures, and decorative finishes.
These products are increasingly being specified for:
- Restaurants
- Hotels
- Cafés.
- Retail spaces.
- Commercial interiors.
- Residential accent areas.
Designers are placing greater emphasis on creating spaces with unique character and personality. Small-format tiles allow for creative layouts, bold patterns, custom color combinations, and distinctive visual identities that help projects stand out.
From contemporary mosaics to modern interpretations of handcrafted tile aesthetics, innovation within this category appears to have no limits.
COTTON FINISHES: WARMTH AND NATURAL COMFORT
Another trend we saw repeatedly across multiple manufacturers was the growing use of Cotton finishes.
This finish is characterized by an exceptionally soft and natural texture that creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. In contrast to the industrial and ultra-minimalist surfaces that have dominated recent years, Cotton-finish porcelain delivers a more relaxed, organic, and comfortable aesthetic.
As homeowners and designers increasingly seek spaces that feel connected to nature and promote well-being, these surfaces have become particularly popular in residential applications.
When paired with natural materials such as wood, stone, and organic textiles, Cotton tile finishes help create environments that feel timeless, welcoming, and effortlessly elegant. It’s no surprise that they are quickly becoming a favorite among architects and interior designers.
TRAVERTINE AND PERLINO: THE STARS OF THE INDUSTRY
If we had to summarize our visit and the overall direction of the market in just two words, they would be: Travertine and Perlino.
Nearly every manufacturer we visited presented new interpretations of these natural stones through advanced porcelain tile collections.
Travertine tile continues to be one of the most sought-after materials due to its timeless elegance, natural warmth, and strong connection to Mediterranean-inspired architecture. Its soft movement and organic appearance make it suitable for both traditional and contemporary projects.
Meanwhile, Perlino-inspired porcelain is experiencing remarkable growth thanks to its subtle veining, refined textures, and versatile neutral tones. It integrates beautifully into a wide range of design styles, from classic luxury interiors to minimalist contemporary spaces.
The reality is that the market is currently saturated with innovative interpretations of these materials, and all indications suggest they will remain among the most influential design trends for years to come.
CARVED SURFACE TECHNOLOGY IS TRANSFROMING PORCELAIN TILE
Beyond design trends, we also observed significant technological advancements throughout the industry.
An increasing number of manufacturers in both Italy and Spain are adopting Carved Surface technology, one of the most exciting innovations currently shaping the porcelain tile market.
So, what exactly is Carved Surface technology?
Traditionally, the graphic design printed on a porcelain tile and the physical texture of the surface were developed separately. With Carved Surface technology, these two elements are synchronized with extraordinary precision.
This means that the visible veining, textures, and design details align perfectly with the tile’s physical relief, creating a much more authentic and realistic appearance.
The technology is particularly effective for porcelain surfaces that replicate natural materials such as:
- Marble
- Travertine
- Natural Stone
- Wood
The result is a level of visual depth and tactile realism that surpasses previous generations of porcelain tile, bringing these surfaces closer than ever to the look and feel of the original natural materials.
